Two for This Week's New Yorker

I was thrilled to sell a series of tennis-themed spots to the New Yorker. Additionally, Max gave me a fun color illustration (1/3 page) in the front of the magazine, on the theme of the Muslim Voices Festival.

New Work: New Yorker, BusinessWeek, NY Times

Thanks to Max, Nick and Aviva for some really fun jobs. The spots for the NY Times Week in Review were quite a challenge: one day turnaround, lots of thinking, and trying to avoid cliches. For the New Yorker piece, I am including a detail - some of the texture and more subtle color doesn't show up when I reduce these images and save them for the web. The BusinessWeek piece accompanied a story about the CEO failing to get the numbers up. The collar thing just 'happened' while I was sketching - luck!

A Series of Opera Poster Illustrations

These were a real blast to finish and I love working on a cohesive series of images. This style is a slight departure from my standard editorial work. It was fun to experiment and push myself in new directions. Thanks to Troy and Cat for this great job. Go see these performances! Support the arts!

New Site, New Work for New York Times

Welcome to my new website. As you can see, the layout is the same as the old site, since I was frequently told that art directors liked the design and the set-up. But, I have cleaned things up and added more info, as well as added a few new sections (Lectures and Demos, for instance). Please let me know what you think about the facelift!

Here is a new piece for the NY Times (thanks, as always, to Richard!). This piece accompanies an essay about an old doorman who drops knowledge on passersby and building residents, while standing out front chain-smoking.

I was thrilled to get another call from ESPN (Thanks, Lou and Ed!) for this insanely fun portrait of New England kicker, Stephen Gostkowski. I had fun adding some drama with the rain, the camera angle, etc.

NY Times Book Review

Thanks to Nicholas for my first NYT Book Review assignment. This is a dark novel about wealth, Adam and Eve, boredom, family secrets, infidelity, twins, murder... lots of stuff! I think the drawing suits the subject matter and I enjoyed making it.

Back from NYC, and new work

Had a great trip to NYC- thanks to Nicholas, Kim, Leanne, Christine, Nick, Don, Dave, Mani, Susan, Joel, Liz, and Max for the welcoming visits. Thanks also to Sam, Chris, Josh, Grady, Ted, and Jillian for the lunch and studio time.

ESPN spots, and spots, and spots...

More calls than usual for spots in the past week or so (5+ jobs...). Here are some of my favorites from a series of ten for Lou at ESPN - thanks, Lou. These were fun. I'm going to start a 'spots' portfolio over at Illoz.
